Winter of Discontent (Paintings) (2024)

My series, Winter of Discontent, was created during a harsh moment in my life. My elderly father was caught in an ATV accident and spent a month in Albany Medical. I was left with the responsibility of working, taking care of my elderly mother, cooking, taking care of my cat, dealing with the fallout of a car wreck, and trying to practice art. I had tremendous help from neighbors and family, but it was still a stressful, suffocating experience. I had a large tube of pyrrole red that was left unused for a few years along with very little spare time, leading me to produce small studies when I could. The white frames provide a balance to the harsh red expanse while acting as a visual metaphor for the constraint I felt. I’m very grateful to be here today when it was very unlikely that I would be here at all.
